Ephraim

Ephraim is the name of a Biblical man, a tribe of Israel, an area, a mountain region, a city and a gate.

Ephraim, the man
Ephraim is the 2nd son of Joseph, son of Jacob (Israel) and Asenath. He was born in Egypt.
He [Joseph] named the second Ephraim, “For,” he said, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.” —Genesis 41:52 NASB
Now to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him. —Genesis 46:20 NASB
The first incident recorded about him is his being placed, along with his brother Manasseh, before their grandfather Jacob so that he might bless them (Genesis 48; compare Genesis 27:1).
The intention of Joseph was that the right hand of the aged patriarch should be placed on the head of the elder of the two; but Jacob set Ephraim the younger before his brother, “guiding his hands wittingly.”
Before Joseph’s death, Ephraim’s family had reached the third generation (Genesis 50:23).
