Kirjath-arba
also known as: Kiriath-arba and Hebron
Hebrew: קִרְיַת אַרְבַּע —transliteration: Qiryath Arba or Qiryath Haarba —meaning: city of the four, or fourfold city; or city of Arba —occurrences: 9
This is the original name of Hebron, so called from the name of its founder, one of the Anakim (Genesis 23:2; 35:27; Joshua 15:13)
When the Israelites conquered the land of Canaan, this city was given to Caleb by Joshua as his portion.
The Jews interpret the name as meaning “the city of the four”, that is of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Adam, who were all, as they allege, buried there.
