Hebrew: פִרְעָתוֹנִי —transliteration: Pirathoni —meaning: a Pirathonite

Pirathon is an ancient town mentioned in the Bible. It was located within the Tribe of Ephraim.

Its inhabitants are called Pirathonites, two of whom are mentioned by name in Scripture.

  1. Abdon, a judge of the children of Israel before they had kings

    He is the son of Hillel (Judg. 12:13, 15).

    Abdon was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.

  2. Benaiah the Ephraimite (2 Sam. 23:30), one of David’s 30 heroes (“mighty ones”)
