weaving and weavers in the Bible

Weaving of fabric was an art practiced in very early times (Exodus 35:35). The Egyptians were specially skilled in it (Isaiah 19:9; Ezek. 27:7), and some have regarded them as its inventors.

In the wilderness, the Hebrews practiced it (Exodus 26:1, 8; 28:4, 39; Leviticus 13:47).

It is referred to in subsequent times as specially the women’s work (2 Kings 23:7; Proverbs 31:13, 24).

The loom is mentioned in the book of Isaiah.

My life span is gone,
Taken from me like a shepherd’s tent;
I have cut off my life like a weaver.
He cuts me off from the loom;
From day until night You make an end of me. —Isaiah 38:12 NKJV

We read of the loom’s “shuttle” (Job 7:6), “the pin” of the beam (Judges 16:14), “the web” (Judges 16:13-14), and “the beam” (1 Samuel 17:7; 2 Samuel 21:19).

The warp and the woof of weaving are also mentioned.

whether in warp or woof, of linen or of wool, whether in leather or in any article made of leather, if the mark is greenish or reddish in the garment or in the leather or in the warp or in the woof or in any article of leather, it is a leprous mark and shall be shown to the priest. —Leviticus 13:48-49

Cloth is mentioned many times in Scripture.

…spread over it a cloth of pure blue… Over the table of the bread of the Presence they shall also spread a cloth of blue and put on it the dishes and the pans and the offering bowls and the jars for the drink offering, and the continual bread shall be on it. And they shall spread over them a cloth of scarlet material… —Numbers 4:6-8 excerpts

…your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth… —Ezekiel 16:13 excerpt

But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. —Matthew 9:16
