“Fastest draw in the North… kinda.”
I don’t know why you’re reading this review, especially if you’re not Canadian. Up in Canada, we have this actor named Paul Gross, who used to play a Mountie on a TV show called “Due South.” Every two years or so, Paul Cross makes an ultra Canadian movie. By Canadian, I mean that his movies go to great lengths to inform the audience that this movie was MADE BY CANADIANS IN CANADA ABOUT CANADIAN STUFF. His movie, “Men with Brooms,” was about curling. Another movie, “Passchendaele,” was about a Canadian soldier in WWI. This move, “Gunless,” is about an American outlaw who comes to Canada and finds himself, through a strange set of circumstances, without a gun.
Here is what is objectionable about the movie: The hero and a woman get drunk and wind up sleeping together. It should be noted that the two don’t get drunk intentionally. They just drink some punch that has been spiked. They wake up the next morning and realize they made a mistake.
I don’t recall much profanity in the movie, but what I appreciated the most was its message of non-violent resolution. The Paul Gross character is an outlaw, one who believes that a gunfight is the only way to right a wrong. By the end of the movie, he sees how silly and evil this worldview is.
So there ya go. If you happen to see “Gunless” in a video store somewhere, give it a try. You’ll make Paul Gross pretty happy.
