“For a price, any organ in your body can be replaced. But it can alse be repossessed. Consider them your final notice.”
“Repomen” is set in the not to distant future. The opening of the movie gives the viewer the impression that some calamity has occurred, but it’s not specified. Then the movie cuts to a world much like our own, except that bio-mechanical devices have been developed that can replace failed body organs, as well as enhance other body functions (such as vision and hearing). The one catch is that the bio-mechanical devices are expensive, but not to worry, the “Union” (the corporation that sells the devices) has payment options to fit any budget. Thus enter the repomen.
The repomen come to repossess bio-mechanical devices when a person fails to keep up on the payments. One repoman is Remy (Jude Law). He is a highly skilled repoman, who is not only good at finding people who are behind on their payments, but also at retrieving the bio-mechanical devices. When he teams up with his old army buddy, Jake Freival (Forest Whitaker), they become the “superstars” of the bio-mechanical repo world and even find “nests” of debtors who are trying to leave the country to escape from having their organs repossessed.
Retrieving a bio-mechanical device is never implied but depicted in all it’s blood and gore. That’s right, the repomen cut open the bodies and pull out the devices of those who are behind on their payments, even if it leads to the death of the debtor.
Remy is good a getting back major organs like kidneys, livers, and the occasional heart. On one repossession, a device he uses malfunctions and causes Remy’s heart to fail. Remy is then left without an option and has to have a bio-mechanical heart to survive. When he returns to work after he leaves the hospital (and after his wife leaves him), he attempts to repossess devices again, but now, because he also has a bio-mechanical device, he can’t. His friend Jake tries to help him by setting up some easy repo’s, but even then, Remy can’t do the job. Eventually, Remy falls behind on his own payments and makes a run for safety to the “dead zone” with a girl he meets who also is behind on her payments (and is addicted to some new narcotic which Remy helps her kick for the rest of the movie).
Jake, Remy’s friend, is then tasked with tracking Remy down and getting the heart back. Eventually, Remy and Jake fight, and it seems that Jake wins when he knocks Remy out. But, then, Remy wakes up and finds that his new girlfriend and lover subdued Jake. They try to make a break for the safety of another country, but realize that it’s impossible. Instead, they decide to go to the Union’s headquarters and erase all the files regarding their debt. In this murdering attack, Remy and his girlfriend overcome dozens of guards and attackers and make it into the “Pink Room” where the corporate server resides. But, there is no keyboard to access the server, so Remy and his girlfriend take turns cutting into each other’s bodies to scan the devices as returned.
Then Jake shows up just as Remy’s girlfriend is about to die, turns on his supervisor and helps Remy save her life. Then together they destroy the server. Finally, they are shown at a tropical destination, enjoying the freedom they have earned. But this is not the end. It’s just a… well, I would ruin the ending if I finished the sentence.
Technically, “Repomen” is well filmed and well performed. The graphic killings, fighting, and repossessions are believable, as are many of the other aspects of the movie. Unfortunately, “Repomen” is one of the most violent, gore filled, sexually explicit, and vulgar movies I have ever seen. Nothing is left to the imagination. Blood fills the screen, as bodies are cut open and mechanical organs are exposed. There are many instances of frontal nudity, sexuality, sexual intercourse, fighting, violent killing, murder, and mayhem.
Profanity is pervasive, with the f-word used over 30 times.
The only redeeming aspect (if it is even that) is that “Repomen” accurately depicts a world without God. Without God, mankind does whatever seems right in their own eyes. There are no moral absolutes, ethics, modesty, kindness, pity, or true sacrificial love.
“Repomen” is not a movie I recommend for anyone to see especially Christians.
