Here’s what the distributor says about their film: “MIDNIGHT SUN is a romantic tearjerker about 17-year-old Katie Price (Bella Thorne), sheltered at home since childhood with a rare genetic condition, a life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight. Having only her father Jack (Rob Riggle) for company, Katie’s world opens up after dark when she ventures outside to play her guitar. One night, her dreams come true when she’s noticed and asked out by her longtime crush Charlie (Patrick Schwarzenegger), whom she’s secretly watched from her bedroom window for years. As they embark on nightly summer excursions, Katie’s risk to sunlight grows and she’s presented with the gut-wrenching dilemma of whether she can live a normal life with her newfound soul mate.”

This film is based on the 2006 Japanese film, “Midnight Sun.”

Secular Movie Critics
…A manipulative but effective tearjerker… does an effective job of tugging at vulnerable teenage hearts, while managing to provide a few laughs along the way. None of the film rings remotely true…
Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter
Bella Thorne doesn't look very sick in tearjerker ‘Midnight Sun’… One of my biggest pet peeves is when a movie willfully misrepresents how a disease works to advance a plot. …
Barbara VanDenburgh, Arizona Republic
…The trouble isn’t just that “Midnight Sun” cherry-picks the most poetic elements of a real-world disease to serve its transparently manipulative ends, but that it offers audiences such an unrealistic portrait of romance in the process. …
Peter Debruge, Variety
…Leads Thorne and Schwarzenegger are mildly charming in a TV-soap way, but it’s all so desperately clean and savoury (even her XP is photogenic—unlike in reality). …
Time Out
Bella Thorne shines in otherwise lackluster film…
Katie Walsh, Tribune News Service
…disparate tones clot into such a peculiar and exhausting bottleneck that it's perhaps inevitable that the film's actors are by and large unable to bring convincing life to their thinly sketched characters…
Derek Smith, Slant
…Once the believability drops, the seams start to show, whether it’s some extras who seem aware of the camera, bad edits, comic-timing misfires or songs written for Thorne that aren’t quite as good as everyone onscreen says they are…
Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle
…Mawkish, bland and banal, this dreary love story — and it’s no “Love Story” — seems to think it can throw together dying girl and handsome prince, and that’s all there is to it. …
Alonso Duralde, The Wrap
