“Fight for family”

Here’s what the distributor says about their film: “A retired sheriff and his wife, grieving over the death of their son, set out to find their only grandson. They end up fighting to rescue him from a dangerous off-grid family.”

This film is based on the novel Let Him Goby Larry Watson.

Negative
Negative—Thoughtful Drama… Until it turned a DARK Corner.

The first two-thirds of this movie were excellent. It was a thoughtful drama about a good-hearted retired sheriff and his wife in 1950’s Montana who recently lost their only child, a son, to an equestrian accident, leaving their baby grandson as their only heir. When their daughter-in-law gets remarried to an abusive man, and they suddenly disappear, the legitimate question of grandparents” rights is raised, and the paternal grandparents demonstrate their desire to step up and protect their grandson. This leads to an sudden journey to find their grandson and either be assured that he is safe or bring him back home. They ultimately find their daughter-in-law and grandson, and they were 100% justified in their suspicions. Confrontations happen, and then about two-thirds of the way into the movie, a suddenly violent and gratuitous amputation with an ax morphs this movie into a gruesome slasher film (the kind that would give this 50-something nightmares).

I watched it until I couldn’t bear to, then fast forwarded, looking for resolution and the happy ending that I trusted was forthcoming. It wasn’t. The first two-thirds of this movie was so good that I couldn’t reconcile it to what came next, and I was deeply offended that those responsible for the movie took it in such a needlessly gory direction.

Secular Movie Critics
…climaxes are grisly… Despite a searing performance from Diane Lane, writer-director Thomas Bezucha’s film ultimately self-immolates. …a hammy melodrama that’s parched for backstory… [1/4]
Dan Rubbins, Slant
…It’s a throwback slow-burn thriller and an over-the-top scenery-chewing buffet — sometimes in the same scene. The back-and-forth tone prevents it from being the serious examination of human behavior (and misbehavior) it believes itself to be. It makes the experience of watching more strange than immersive. …
Bill Goodykoontz, The Arizona Republic
…a brutal Western… This is Diane Lane’s movie, all the way. She is as poised as ever, and she can switch on the charm, but she radiates a force of purpose that will not be muffled or repelled, and it’s fascinating to see Costner, so accustomed to saddling up as a leading man, dismount and back away. …
Anthony Lane, The New Yorker
…narrowly aimed at one demographic—audiences over 50 who like a little violence with their late-life dramas… dusty, blood-soaked path. …
Barry Hertz, The Globe and Mail (Toronto)
…A quiet, adult drama interrupted by genre-pic contrivances… heartfelt, handsomely made but unconvincing tonal mash-up…
John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter
…a touchingly bone-weary romance steeped in vengeance… “Let Him Go” isn’t subtle, but as a genre film it’s original and shrewdly made, with a floridly gripping suspense. …
Owen Gleiberman, Variety
…a slow-moving sexagenarian rampage of revenge… a tanned hide of a movie about the violence that results from conflicting ideas of what this country should be… [C]
