While being somewhat suspenseful and enjoyable, “Operation Dumbo Drop” is not very realistic in a lot of aspects. While many don’t find this movie enjoyable, kids will probably chuckle and worry about the elephant’s fate.
From a Christian perspective, it is hard to cover war, especially the Vietnam war. So, you water it down a lot. I don’t recall seeing anyone (no humans at least) dying in this movie. Even though lots of bullets were flying, most of them missed. For young people sensitive to violence, caution should be exercised before watching this movie. Perhaps the most offensive item to Christians is the elephant itself, or what it means to the Vietnamese people. It is a sign of prosperity to them… so they are relying on things other than Christ (anyone want to take them the Good News?).
The premise of the story is that Captain Sam Cahill (Danny Glover) is going home, since his tour of duty as a liaison to a small Vietnamese village is over. He is being replaced by Captain Doyle (Ray Liotta). Unfortunately, the North Vietnamese enter the village and detect American influence and kill the village’s elephant. The village is important due to its vicinity to the Ho Chi Minh trail, therefore a replacement elephant is sought… and herein lies the adventure.
All in all, an enjoyable movie, especially for younger folks. If you don’t expect too much, then this might be a nice break for your entertainment budget.
