Despite the enormous budget spent on this film, “Waterworld” doesn’t make the grade. Kevin Costner portrays an ancient mariner living on a world much different from our own. Both polar ice caps have melted, causing the entire Earth to become one endless ocean (the very idea is anti-Biblical because God promised that the Earth would never again be fully covered with water after the flood of Noah). To adapt to this new environment, the character whom Costner portrays has webbed feet and gills—a blatant acceptance of the theory of Evolution.
All humankind must now exist on boats and floating cities. A rumored place called “dry land,” however, awaits those who can discover it. Enola (Tina Majorino), a child prodigy sailing with Costner’s character, has the secret map to dry land tattooed on her back. Because of this secret, she is being hunted by “the Smokers”—a villainous group of pirates. Despite the weak plot, “Waterworld” did harbor a good dose of action. Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tina Majorino, and Dennis Hopper all did a fine job in their roles. If you haven’t seen it yet don’t worry. you’re not missing much. Contains some profanity, partial female nudity, adult situations, excessively grotesque violence, anti-Biblical worldview.
