left-handed men in the Bible
Hebrew: שְׂמֹאול —transliteration: semol or semovl —meaning: the left
A left-hander is one who is either unable to use the right hand skilfull and therefore uses the left, or he uses the left as well as the right, being ambidextrous.
Out of all these people 700 choice men were left-handed; each one could sling a stone at a hair and not miss. —Judges 20:16 LSB
The genetics for left-handedness was apparently common in the tribe of Benjamin.
Then the sons of Israel cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up a savior for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. And the sons of Israel sent tribute by his hand to Eglon the king of Moab. —Judges 3:15 LSB
In biblical times, “the left” is also a way of referring to the north, see “left”.
