Tychicus
Greek: Τυχικός —transliteration: Tuchikos —meaning: fortuitous or chance
English pronunciation: TIE-kih-kus
Ancient Greek pronunciation (approximate): too-khee-KOOS or tikee-KOOS
This is the name of a Christian man of the Roman province Asia. He is called “the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord” (Ephesians 6:21 NASB) and “our beloved brother and faithful servant and fellow bond-servant in the Lord” (Colossians 4:7 NASB) (see: Ephesians 6:21-22).
With Trophimus, he accompanied Paul on a part of his journey from Macedonia to Jerusalem (Acts 20:4).
Tychicus accompanied the converted runaway slave and thief Onesimus back to his master Philemon with an explanatory letter from the Apostle Paul.
Tychicus’s name appears in 5 Scripture verses:
- Acts 20:4
- Ephesians 6:21
- Colossians 4:7
- 2 Timothy 4:12
- Titus 3:12
He is alluded to also in Colossians 4:7, Titus 3:12 and 2 Timothy 4:12 as having been with Paul at Rome, from where he sent him to Ephesus, probably for the purpose of building up and encouraging the Church there.
