In one respect, it was too bad that the same time Johnny Cash produced this movie (he at that time in his life had professed a bold faith in the Lord) the Billy Graham team had come out with a more powerful presentation of the Life of Christ based on The Gospel of John. My impression is that both films were presenting an equally Biblically based and truly reverent picture of Jesus” ministry, and both deserved an equal showing, if not in the secular world, at least among Christians.
Johnny Cash’s film was one of the first major productions to show Jesus heartily laughing and portraying a joyful lifestyle by which some could have falsely accused Him of gluttony and drunkenness (although He actually lived neither way, although, admittedly, He fasted quite infrequently in comparison to certain others of the day). It shows Him at play with innocent, pure children, as I’m sure He frequently was.
The screenplay by the dramatists may not have been on a par with contemporary Hollywood standards, but the music was top rate and truly befitted Cash’s stature as a star on the Nashville scene.
